Shed Gable Roof Framing

Gable shed roof framing a gable style is the easiest to build but offers very little storage in the attic.

Much depends on the structure size and the desired attic loft or headroom. Carry a gable end in and set it on the top plate upside down and backwards near the end wall. Nail 2 boards onto your walls as top plates. A simple gable shed roof is often built using 2 4 or 2 6 lumber for the rafters and 2 4 for the collar ties.

Framing most common types of roof gable roof. Nail the first boards on top of your wall where you plan to build your roof. When you nail in the second boards offset the seams of the upper and lower layers by at least 24 in 61 cm. Then you will have more storage.

Set a ladder at the outside of both corners of the end wall. Truss detail of shed. Use 8 penny nails to attach the first 2 in 4 in 5 1 cm 10 2 cm board to the wall studs. Raise it up horizontally and hold it in place with a 2 4 resting on the floor in the center of the base piece and one at the top center of the truss.

The members are held together with a 5 8 inch plywood gusset. Unless of course you have a very steep pitch on your trusses or rafters. Gable shed roof trusses in place with ceiling joists installed trusses are attached to the top plate by using 3 16d common nails toe nailed from the truss end into the top plate 2 on one side and one on the other.
