Photoshop Matting Greyed Out

Simply select the layer with the fringe on it and go layer matting defringe and typically i defringe between 1 3 pixels depending on how much fringe it there.

What am i missing. Use photoshop to put a digital frame mat around your photos duration. When you go to the filters drop down menu there are more expandable options like artistic blur brush strokes render etc. Some of the filters work and some don t.

My image is 8 bits rgb so that s not the problem. I bought photoshop cs5 and it worked great for a long time then some of the filters quite working. But instead of being bold the words are a grey color and i can t click on them to expand. Matting option is grey out in photoshop any idea why.

On photoshop cs5 i am having problems of the crop tool being grayed out under the image tab. It s even disabled in psd files where i ve used lighting effects in the past.
